Generations of Family Farming

The McNaughton’s arrived in Canada in 1832 from Scotland. They settled in the Chateauguay Valley near the river and began their farming operation. They hand built the brick farmhouse in 1908, which is still the McNaughton’s home today.

A glimpse of life on the McNaughton’s can be seen in the 1958 documentary, Country Treshing by Wolf Koenig.

In the summer of 1987, a barn fire, resulted in the McNaughton’s having to start over rebuild. The help of the community was critical in them getting back on their feet quickly and being able to get back to milking their herd. The next decade was one of investment and large advances in farming technology.

Their herd of holstein cows were a source of pride for the family and their farm was awarded a silver medal from L’ordre du Mérite Agricole in 1995. The dairy operation ceased in roughly 2015 and the focus turned to harvesting crops.

Their children and grand children are now keen to be helping on the farm and keeping tradition alive. They will be the 8th generation, of the McNaughton family, successfully operating on the land.
